My Experience With Garmin GPSMAP 1222XSV

I feel like this device is an advanced all-in-1 solution. It has a 12-inch display size with a keypad interface, and a multifunction control knob is available.

Garmin GPSMAP 1222XSV my test

GPS and GLONASS receivers have an internal sensitivity of 10 Hz Panoptix and CHIRP ClearVü/Chirp SideVü scanning sonars and a single-channel CHIRP sonar (transducers sold separately), which are built-in.

Its 12-inch GPSMAP 1222XSV keyed combo provides a superior all-in-one solution. Garmin CHIRP sonar, CHIRP ClearVu, LakeVu HD Ultra, and CHIRP SideVu are all supported. As a bonus, it offers built-in compatibility for premium Garmin sonar modules. In addition, this device has user-programmable keys and a multifunction control knob that goes with its huge, bright screen.

Extended hardware equipment ensures outstanding system performance (CPU, GPS memory). Furthermore, high-quality workmanship and materials are used, and the IPS screen quality in high-end devices is also in line with the required costs.

Regarding operational alternatives, the professional class may choose either a touchscreen or a keyboard (depending on the model series). However, those with high technology, quality standards, and a hefty “petty cash” budget may take advantage of the GPSMap devices (84xx series).

If that isn’t an option, lower-cost GPMAP consumer courses are available. It’s worth noting that, because of its high transmitting power, it’s also possible to use the 1-2 KW class transducers to bring up photos of the deep sea from more than 1000 meters.

Basic Features

Network Connectivity

It is possible to connect numerous Garmin Marine Network-enabled devices (sharing of sonar) to share data such as maps, sonar, Panoptix sonar, and a dome or open-array radar. The following are supported by NMEA 2000 and NMEA 0183 networks: Autopilots, weather, digital switching, Fusion-Link, VHF, and AIS.

Wi-Fi connectivity

BlueChart Mobile 2.0 and Garmin Helm applications include a built-in Wi-Fi connection. This app lets you operate and monitor your compatible chartplotter from a compatible smartphone or tablet while giving the mariner better situational awareness.

Apps like BlueChart Mobile for iPad® and iPhone® allow you to collect accurate weather data while planning purposes and routes. Then, you wirelessly transfer it to a compatible networked Garmin chartplotter installed on your boat. Even a VIRB action camera may be streamed and controlled from the chartplotter.

Pre-installed ANT connectivity

The GNX Wind marine instrument, the gWind Wireless 2 transducer, and wireless remote controls are all compatible with the built-in ANT wireless connection of the quatix® marine watch.

Active Captain

Using the ActiveCaptain app, you can control your maritime experience practically anywhere, thanks to built-in Wi-Fi. It connects your compatible mobile device to your chartplotter, HD charts, maps, and the boating community in a simple but powerful way. No matter where you are, the Garmin Quickdraw Contours Community and new maps and charts are always at your fingertips. Smart notifications on your chartplotter screen keep you in the loop. ActiveCaptain can also sync with your chartplotter when planning a trip or prefishing a lake. Furthermore, you will be alerted to new software updates and can choose when to install them on your device.

Built-in Sonar

Only transducers are required for the advanced real-time sonar images pre-installed in the package. The Garmin CHIRP ClearVü, 1 kW CHIRP sonar, and CHIRP SideVü scanning sonars are included in the package. In addition, various transducers, premium Garmin sonar modules, and Panoptix all-seeing sonar are all supported (sold separately).

Any device on the network may access the internal sonar of a networked combo. Other options include radar, time of day, GPS speed, and other overlays on the sonar screen.

Axis Heading Sensor and Position Refresh

The fast and responsive 10 Hz GPS and GLONASS receivers are included in the device to improve the fluidity of your movements on the screen. It allows you to quickly and easily drop up to 5,000 precise GPS waypoints—and then find your way back to them.

Maps on the Water

The expandable memory includes two SD card slots. So a bit of memory space can be used to buy more maps, like BlueChart® g2 HD, which includes Garmin’s revolutionary Auto Guidance and many other features.

Quickdraw Contours to create your own high-resolution maps.

The HD fishing maps may be created on the screen with 1-foot contours in seconds. Make them work for you. Maps like this are yours to keep. The Quickdraw Community on Garmin Connect allows you to keep your data private or share it with others.

Built-in SailAssist Features

The pre-race guidance page on your Chartplotter shows your virtual starting line, data fields showing ground lines, time to burn before the start, and a race timer that can be synchronized across all your networked Garmin GPS products. This feature helps sailing racers gain a competitive edge by maximizing their exposure to the wind. A more advanced wind rise, heading and course lines, set and drift, real and apparent wind data and more are all included in the sailing features.

GPX Waypoints

The industry-standard GPX software formatting lets you import geo-referenced waypoints data from other GPS devices, like a Garmin handheld, into your new Garmin Chartplotter. You can do this with the GPX format.

Panoptix Livescope Features

Combining Garmin GPSMAP 1222XSVxsv with the Panoptix Livescope system will get a wholesome marine experience.

  • While your boat is motionless, you can see highly detailed, easy-to-interpret live scanning sonar pictures of the structure, bait, and swimming fish around your boat.
  • The transducer can be easily adjusted to meet your fishing tactics; you can point it forward to look around your boat or point it down to see directly below your boat.
  • Real-time scanning sonar pictures up to 200 feet down and afar may be seen with incredible clarity.
  • The Attitude and Heading Reference System (AHRS) keeps sonar views on the Chartplotter screen even during bad weather.
  • The Garmin Marine Network connection with your compatible Garmin chartplotter is easy thanks to its simple “plug and play” feature that makes it easy to set up and use.

Sonar technology has never been better than this. You’ve never fished before like this. Panoptix LiveScope System is a real-time scanning sonar and is a feature of Panoptix. Fish swimming around a well-defined object may be seen in live scanning sonar pictures that are simple to understand. As you reel in your bait, you may even see it. You don’t even have to be moving your boat. With some practice, you may tell the difference between different fish arches using these photographs.

Transducer with Dual Modes

One transducer provides both LiveScope Down and LiveScope Forward modes. Changing the transducer mode is simple; use LiveScope Forward to view incredibly clear photos of the structure and swimming fish surrounding your boat, and use LiveScope Down to see straight below your boat. Using a compatible Garmin chartplotter, the screen automatically refreshes. In addition, you can count on AHRS stabilization to keep your sonar image stable when the going gets tough.

Panoptix LiveScope Down

When your boat is still, LiveScope Down mode lets you see high-definition scanning sonar pictures of the structure and moving fish in a way you’ve never seen before.

Panoptix LiveScope Forward

For pre-cast reconnaissance and fishing, LiveScope Forward mode is a must-have. Even if your boat is still, you may see structure and fish moving all around it in high-resolution scanning sonar pictures, which are simple to understand even if your boat is immobile.

The Panoptix LiveScope scanning sonar system includes a compact GLS 10 sonar black box with an LVS32 transducer and a simple plug-and-play Garmin Marine Network connection. This makes it easy to install and seamlessly integrates with your compatible Garmin Chartplotter.

Alternatives to the Garmin GPSMAP 1222XSVxsv

GPSMAP 8410–8424

In addition to an integrated chart plotter, these devices have complete maritime network features on a screen size of 10 to 24 inches, including internet access. Unfortunately, a fish finder is not included in the purchase price (like the transducer).

However, the unit may function as a sonar if a suitable device and transducer are already present on the network. Depending on the model, the plotter costs between $2,800 and $15,000.

GPSMAP 8410xsv–8416xsv

It is identical to the gadget mentioned above but with a UHD class and track log built-in fish finder. The costs vary from 2900$ to 5600$, the latter being the most expensive. At first glance, it’s hard to see why the integrated version is less costly than the pure plotter version.

GPSMAP 10×2 and 12×2

There are a variety of 10-inch and 12-inch models with plotter and depth finder technology. Also, there is full support for Panoptix, a quality black box fishfinder, and the marine network. The devices may be operated entirely using a keyboard and a joystick (as an alternative, also via a touchscreen). Costs range between €1800 and €2400 without a transducer.

What should I consider when buying GPSMAP?

Garmin has a wide variety of products, so there will be something for everyone. No matter how much money you have or how high your expectations are for technology, exciting feature, and color, it doesn’t matter. Instead, you should focus on the following:

  • Transducer options are available for each model.
  • 2D chirp performance
  • Panoptix’s real-time sonar

The ClearVü, SideVü, plotter, and premium navigation features are also important. Also, watch a video review when using QuickDraw contour mapping and the ActiveCaptain software online.

All three series provide excellent value for the money. Nevertheless, the absence of a chart plotter in the Striker models at 7 and 9 inches is a significant negative because the competition has already updated suitably in this price range.

Final Thoughts

The GPSMAP 1222XSV from Garmin includes a wide range of useful functions for all users. If you follow the recommended use guidance inside, it will prolong the power usage of your Garmin GPSMAP 1222XSV.
