Who is Leon Marchand

Leon Marchand is a competitive swimmer who represents France in various international events. Born on May 17th 2002, this young athlete mainly focuses on the butterfly and individual medley events.

Marchand also holds the record in Europe in the 400-meter individual medley. And not only that, he’s also the French record holder for the 200-meter individual medley, 200-meter butterfly, and also 200-meter breaststroke.

At the 2020 Summer Olympics, he competed in the 200-meter individual medley, which resulted in the 6th position. Later, he won the NCAA titles for the 200-yard individual medley and 200-yard breaststroke during the NCAA Division I 2022.

Marchand also competed in the World Aquatics Championships 2022 when he participated in the 200-meter and 400-meter individual medley, where he won gold medals. Other than those, he successfully snatched an additional silver in the 200-meter butterfly event.

During the NCAA Division I 2023, he got the NCAA titles for various events, including 200 and 400-yard individual medley, plus the 200-yard breaststroke.

2021-2022

During Marchand’s first NCAA Championships, the man successfully won not only the NCAA title but also made himself the fastest swimmer in history in the 200-meter IM category. His time was recorded in 1:37.69.

In 400-meter IM, he scored a silver medal in 3:34.08 and also struck another NCAA title in the 200-meter breaststroke in 1:48.20.

2022-2023

Marchand participated once again in the Arizona State championships, where he set not only the NCAA but also the US record in the 400-meter IM with the time of 3:31.84, breaking the previous record set by Hugo Gonzalez during the previous NCAA events.

International Competition

2020 Olympic Games

In the Olympic Games, Marchand competed in the 400-meter IM, 200-meter fly, and 200-meter IM. He finished in 6th, 14th, and 18th, respectively.

2022 World Championships

In 2022, Marchand participated in the World Championships. During the event, he was noted to be a sensational swimmer with a lot to give. He started his glorious step on day 1 when he competed in the 200-meter breaststroke. Marchand successfully won the event in 4:03.86, seconds away from the World Record set by Michael Phelps.

On the third day, Marchand was going swimmingly to the preliminaries and semifinals of the 200-meter fly. He reached the final on day 4. During the final, he successfully finished in 1:53.37, setting a new French record and winning the silver.

Later on, that day, he continued his way in the 200-meter IM semifinals, which was only an hour later. He clocked in at 1:55.75, leading into the final while also setting a new French record.

On day 5, Marchand played masterfully during the 200-meter IM race by winning the event in 1:55.22.
