Who Is Hwang Sun-Woo

Hwang Sun-Woo is a national swimmer who’s representing South Korea in various international events. He won the World Championships two times and was the flagbearer for South Korea.

The first time everyone knew about Hwang’s brilliance was in October 2020, which was during the time when he posted the excellent time for 100-meter freestyle (48.51) and 200-meter freestyle (1:46.31) at 17 years old. A month later, he improved his team and even broke the national record for the 100-meter freestyle that was previously held by Park Tae Hwan the legendary country swimmer.

A day later, he successfully finished 1:45.92 for the 200-meter freestyle, which was breaking the world junior record, and even beating Michael Phelps at 17.

International Career

2020 Olympic Games

In 2020, Hwang joined the 2020 Olympic Games when he competed in the 200-meter freestyle, the very event when he broke his own record with a time of 1:44.62, re-breaking his previous world junior record. Ultimately, he ended up in 7th position with the time recorded in 1:45.26.

In the next session, he was back for the 100-meter freestyle and successfully achieved 47.56 during the semi-finals. In the final, he got the fifth position in 47.82.

2021 Short Course World Championships

A year later, he participated in his first international championships when he finally won the first international gold medal for him in the 200-meter freestyle event. He successfully finished first with a time recorded in 1:41.60. He also participated in the 100-meter freestyle and finished 6th while breaking the Korean records during the semi-finals and finals.

2022 World Championships

Hwang also participated in the 2022 World Championships held in Budapest. He started with the 200-meter freestyle where he qualified for the semifinals. He successfully got the second position by finishing in 1:44.47.

2022 Short Course World Championships

During the 2022 Short Course World Championships held in Melbourne, he barely got into the final for the 200-meter freestyle, Turns out, he broke his finger during the preliminaries.

But, he was still going on lane 8. Despite his condition, Hwang successfully defended his title and won the event by finishing in 1:39.72, which made him the 2nd fastest swimmer in the world.
