Joshua Liendo Edwards is a Canadian professional swimmer who specializes in butterfly and freestyle. He represented Canada to compete in the 2020 Summer Olympics.
Early Life & Career
Liendo was born in Ontario in a town called Scarborough. His love for swimming was found in Tobago and Trinidad, the places he frequently visited to learn about swimming. When he was nine, the family moved to Markham.
He spent his early day’s training with Toronto Olympian Swim Team and North York Aquatic Club. He also idolizes Michael Phelps and often sees him as his source of inspiration.
Liendo began to show his skilful swimming abilities even during the early days. In the 2017 Canadian Junior Championships, he broke the record in the 100-meter butterfly in 54.76, which he mentioned being his starting career.
Later on, he participated in the 2018 Junior Pan Pacific Championships and won the bronze medal after finishing third in the 4×100 meter medley relay with his fellow teammates.
2019
A year later was a big step for Liendo. In 2019, he first stepped into the senior category. This time, he participated in the 2019 World Aquatics Championships, his first senior match. He helped the team in the 4 x 100 medley relay and finished in 10th.
Later on, he competed in the 2019 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships and was noted to be the junior male swimmer of the year for Swimming Cannada.
2021
Liendo broke the national record in the 100-meter butterfly in 51.40 during the Olympic Trials. This made him qualify for the 2020 Summer Olympics.
In the actual Olympic event, Liendo competed in three events, two of them freestyle, and one butterfly. However, he didn’t qualify for the semifinals. Later on, he participated in the 4 x 100-meter freestyle relay, although only finished in 4th. During the 4 x 100-meter medley relay, he and the team finished in 7th.
Sometimes later, Liendo participated in the FINA World Swimming Championships. This time, he successfully got the bronzes for winning third place in the 50 and 100-meter freestyle events. He also helped the Canadian team to win a gold medal in the 4 x 50-meter mixed freestyle relay.
2022
He began the 2022 season by joining the 2022 World Aquatics Championships. During the 4 x 100-meter freestyle relay, the Canadian team finished in 6th. He qualified for the 100-meter freestyle event with a style. Liendo finished with the personal best time.
The first individual win was obtained during the very event. He successfully got the bronze medal, with only 0.07 seconds from the silver medalist.
Later on, he participated in the Canadian team in the 4 x 100-meter mixed freestyle relay and won the silver medal.
In the 2022 Commonwealth Games, Liendo began the day by winning a bronze in the 4 x 100-meter freestyle relay. He also qualified for the 50-meter butterfly final. And during the final, he finished in 6th with the personal best time, 23.42. On another relay, he got the bronze again in the 4 x 100-meter freestyle,
On day 4, Liendo was considered to be the fourth fastest swimmer in the semifinals in the 100-meter butterfly. And for the final, Liendo finally managed to snatch the gold medal. Liendo closed the final day by winning another bronze in the 50-meter freestyle.
