Who is Nicolo’ Martinenghi

Nicolo’ Martinenghi is a professional swimmer from Italia. He’s the current world record holder for the 4 x 50-meter medley relay. As for the individual records, he holds the Italian records for both the 50-meter and 100-meter breaststroke.

He also won gold medals during the World Aquatics Championships 2022 and European Aquatics Championships 2022 in the 100-meter breaststroke events. Martinenghi also got an additional bronze medal during the 2020 Summer Olympics for the same category.

Early Career

Before starting the international journey, Martinenghi was first competing in various regional and national events under Circolo Canottieri Aniene. Later on, he was sponsored by Arena.

Fast forward to 2017, this is the time when he joined the Italian National Championships, where he scored a new world junior record in the 50-meter breaststroke with a time record of 26.97. Later on, he participated in the European Short Course Swimming Championships in 2017, when he successfully set three new world junior records for the 50-meter and 100-meter breaststroke events.

During the same event, he helped the Italian team to win a silver in the 4×50 meter medley relay.

2020 European Aquatics Championships

Martinenghi opened the year by competing in the European Aquatics Championships 2020 in Budapest. In the 100-meter breaststroke final, he finished in 5th.

Not long after, he joined the team to fight in the 4 x 100-meter mixed medley relay and won a bronze for his effort. With split time and final time of 58.05 and 3:42.30, respectively. It was a new Italian record.

Martinenghi also participated in the 50-meter breaststroke when he won a bronze medal and another bronze was obtained after helping the Italian tea in the 4 x 100-meter medley relay with a split time of 57.84.

2020 Summer Olympics

Martinenghi got the honour of representing Italia in the 100-meter breaststroke event during the 2020 Summer Olympics. And during the actual event, the man already set a new record for Italian in the category with a time record of 58.28,

He successfully snatched a bronze medal after finishing in 58.33, milliseconds away from Arno Kamminga and Adam Peaty.

He also helped the Italian team to win an additional bronze medal in the 4 x 100-meter medley relay.

2021 European Short Course Championships

Another world record was set by Martinenghi during the finals of the European Short Course Swimming Championships in 2021 when he scored a split time of 25.14, which ultimately result in the Italian team winning a gold medal.

He got another gold medal in the 100-meter breaststroke a day later while setting a new Italian record in 55.63. The record-breaking spree didn’t stop there.

Sometimes later, Martinenghi participated in the 50-meter breaststroke semifinals and set a new Italian record in 25.37, which boosted him into the final. In the final event, he got the bronze in the 50-meter breaststroke by finishing in 25.54, which was milliseconds away from breaking a new world record previously set by Cameron van der Burgh.

As an enclosure, Martinenghi helped the Italian team to win silver during the 4 x 50-meter mixed medley relay. The final time was 1:36.39, a new Italian record.

2021 World Short Course Championships

Martinenghi scored a silver medal in the 100-meter breaststroke during the 2021 World Short Course Championships. His time was 55.80, only 0.10 slower than the gold medalist.

Along the event, he participated in various events, including the medley relay. In total, he won 2 bronzes in the 4 x 50-meter mixed medley relays, a silver in the 50-meter breaststroke, and a gold medal for participating in the 4 x 100-meter medley relay along with other fellow Italian teammates.

2022 World Aquatics Championships

During the finals, Martinenghi successfully snatched a silver after winning the second position in the 50-meter breaststroke with a time recorded in 58.26. He was only a second away from The US’ Nic Fink, the gold medalist.

Later on, in the 4 x 100-meter medley relay final, he and the team got a gold medal with a time of 3:27.51, another new Italian record.

2022 European Aquatics Championships

During the final 100-meter breaststroke, Martinenghi won a gold medal with a time recorded in 58.26, which was a new Italian record.

After that, he participated in the 4 x 100-meter mixed medley relay and helped the team to win the silver with a split time of 58.13. Days later, he finally got into the final of the 50-meter breaststroke. And during the actual event, he successfully won a Goldie after finishing and setting a new Italian record in 26.33.

Another gold was obtained from the 4 x 100-meter medley relay.

2022 Swimming World Cup

Martinenghi already going strong since day one of the competition. He started by winning a bronze medal after winning the third in the 100-meter breaststroke. A day later, he improved his placement by winning a silver medal in the 50-meter breaststroke in 26.12.

After being qualified for the 50-meter breaststroke final, he successfully got another silver medal by finishing in 26.02. He participated in the 200-meter backstroke on the final day but finished 12th.

2022 World Short Course Championships

Not long after the previous event, he participated in the 2022 World Short Course Championships. After advancing to the final of the 100-meter backstroke, he managed to win a silver medal by finishing in 56.07.

On the previous day, he helped the Italian team in the 4 x 50-meter mixed medley relay to win silver with a split time of 24.83.

He also joined in the 4 x 50-meter medley relay on day five, and that’s the moment when he and the team won a gold medal with a total time of 1:29.72, effectively breaking the previous 1:30.41 world record.

During the final 50-meter breaststroke, Martinenghi and fellow teammate from Italia, Simone Cerasuolo, won the silver and bronze medals. It was then marked as a moment where two men from the same country stood on the same podium at World Short Course Championships.

Martinenghi closed the event by joining the Italian team in the 4 x 100-meter medley relay to win a bronze medal while setting a new European record in 3:19.06.
