Who Is Ryan F Murphy

Ryan Murphy is a competitive swimmer who’s representing the United States of America in various International swimming competitions. Murphy was born on July 2 1995, and is currently a four-time gold medalist of the Olympics, and the previous holder of the 100-meter backstroke world record.

Early Life

The dream of reaching the Olympic Games has been in Murphy’s mind since he was 7 years old. He studied at Bolles School in Jacksonville, and then the University of California after he graduated.

During his university years, Murphy already showed everyone his skills by swimming under the California Golden Bears (Cal), and winning various NCAA titles, including in the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke events.

2011

Ryan Murphy first earned his international medals back in 2011 when he competed in the 200-meter backstroke at the 2011 World Junior Swimming Championships held in Lima. At that time, Murphy won a bronze in the event with a time record of 1:59.63.

Later on this year, he participated in the 2011 Pan American Games, where he won another bronze in the same category of event. His time was 1:58.50, significantly better than before.

2012

A year later, he competed in the 2012 Olympic Trials, although sadly missed his opportunity. Sometimes later, he participated in the 2012 World Short Course Championships held in Istanbul and won a bronze medal for his effort to reach the third position in the 200-meter backstroke. His time record was 1:57.39.

A gold medal was earned later when he competed in the 4×100 meter medley relay in the heats.

2014

In 2014, Murphy successfully won both the 100-yard and 200 -ard backstrokes in the NCAA D1 Swimming Championships, which was his first. He reached the time record of 44.78 and 1:37.23 for both events. At the same time, he broke the NCAA record and NAG record.

He also participated in the 200-meter, 4×100-meter medleys, and freestyle relays, which helped the team to win the events.

2015

A year later, Murphy broke another record in the 200-yard backstroke, while also sweeping the backstroke events. On top of that, he broke the NCAA record as well while winning the 100-yard backstroke at the same time.

Despite his fifth place in the 200 IM, Murphy was chosen to be the CSCAA Swimmer of the Meet.

2016

In 2016, Murphy competed in the NCAA D1 Swimming Championships, and once again, swept the backstroke events in 43.49 and 1:35.73, for both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke events, respectively. At the same time, he effectively broke several records in the process, including the American, US Open, and his own NCAA records.

He also competed in the 200-yard IM and finished in 3rd. For his brilliant skills, Murphy was once again rewarded with the CSCAA Swimmer of the Meet title.

Later on, he joined the Summer Olympics held in Rio de Janeiro where he won the goldies for both the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke events, with the additional gold in the 4×100 meter medley relay along with his fellow teammates.

Another world record was also broken that time, which was previously set by Aaron Peirsol for the 100-meter backstroke. Murphy’s split time was 51.85, helping the team to get to 3:27.95. In total, he got 3 gold medals with three new Olympic records, and a brand new World Record. Murphy was later named to be one of the 2016 Summer Olympics stars by the Committee.

2017

Murphy did another brilliant performance at the 2017 NCAA Championships when he swept the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events again, and became the 4th man in the history of the NCAA to sweep both events with a single stroke in four years in a row. He also finished in 3rd place in the 200-yard IM.

In the 2017 US National Championships, the man finished first in the 200 meter backstroke, and second in the 100-meter backstroke, effectively making him qualified for the upcoming World Swimming Championships.

Sometimes later, Murphy participated in the 2017 World Championships held in Budapest where he won the bronze medal in the 100-meter and silver in the 200-meter backstroke.

He also joined the team for the 4×100 meter medley and mixed relays, and won gold medals for both events.

2018

Murphy won three gold medals, making his presence stronger in the 2018 Pan Pacific Swimming Championships held in Tokyo. Those medals were coming from the 100-meter backstroke, 200-meter backstroke, and one in the medley relay.

He closed the competition by winning two more gold medals for both events. His winning in the 200-meter backstroke event was also the time when he set a new Championships record. For his effort at the Pan Pacific Championships, Murphy was nominated to receive the Relay Performance of The Year, Male Athlete of The Year, and Male Race of the Year awards by the USA Swimming and won them all.

His journey continued when he fought for the 50-meter, 100-meter, and 200-meter backstroke events at the 2018 FINA World Swimming Championships held in Hangzhou. For his ultimate effort, he won two silvers and one gold.

As for the relay events, he helped the team to achieve two golds and one silver for 4×100 meter medley, 4×50 meter medley, and 4×50 meter medley, respectively.

2019

A year later, Murphy participated in the 2019 World Aquatics Championships where he won three medals there, a silver in the 4×100 meter medley relay, and silver medals in the 200-meter backstroke and 4×100 meter medley relay.

2020

Back in 2020, Murphy was chosen to be one of the captains of the US Olympics at the Summer Olympics. All the captains were veterans and needed to provide guidance for the other teammates.

At the competition, Murphy finally earned his first medal in the 100-meter backstroke and won the third position. The second medal was obtained on day seven when Murphy was competing in the 200-meter backstroke event. With his finish time reaching 1:54.15, he successfully earned a silver for his effort.

Murphy also competed in the 4×100 meter medley relay with Zach Apple, Caeleb Dressel, and Michael Andrew, and ended up winning a gold medal with new world and Olympic records in 3:26.7

On the final day of the competition, the man has gathered up to six Olympic medals, two in relays, and another 4 in the individual events. For his contribution, he earned the Golden Goggle Award for Relay Performance of the Year and the Male Athlete of the Year Golden Goggle Award nominations.

2022

In 2022, Murphy entered the 2022 US National Team Trials held in Greensboro, and qualified for the 200-meter finals. He ended up winning the final, and qualified for the 2022 World Aquatics Championships.

After gaining the second place in the 100-m backstroke final, Murphy was also qualified to join the World Championships team.
