Who is Thomas Dean

Thomas Dean is the world champion swimmer who’s fighting for Great Britain. He’s a British competitive freestyle swimmer, with a history of winning two gold medals, both for 200-meter freestyle and 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay during the 2020 Summer Olympics.

He participated in the European Junior Championships as Britain’s representative. He also made history by winning three golds, two silvers, and one bronze during the 2020 European Championships.

Early Life

Dean was born on May 2nd, 2000, to Jonathan Dean and Jacquie Hughes. He’s the second boy of five children. He spent his younger days in Maidenhead, Berkshire. At that time, he attended Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School in Buckinghamshire.

He found his love for swimming when he was 8. It was the time when he joined the Maidenhead Marlins. In 2018, he attended the University of Bath to study mechanical engineering. In his spare time, he also attended the National Centre for Swimming.

Career

2021 EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS

During this event, Dean was pretty busy winning the golds. In the 2021 European Championships that was held in Budapest, he successfully won not only one but a total of six medals. The golds are for the 400-meter, 800-mixed freestyle, and 400-meter medley, the silver for 400-meter and 800-meter freestyle relays, and the bronze for the 200-meter freestyle.

Again, he faced the Olympic Games as if there was no tomorrow. Dean really showed everyone that he was one of the most talented swimmers the world has ever known. During the event of Olympic Games that was held in 2020, he broke the previous British record, while obtaining the Olympic medal.

Also, during the 4 x 200-meter freestyle relay, he participated in Britain. He hit the pre-preliminaries with a time record of 1:46. This pushed their position to the top for the finals. Then during the finals. Dean clocked in 1:45.72, which resulted in Britain winning the first Olympic Event since 1904.

2022 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

Thomas Dean also participated in the 2022 World Championships, and during this event, he broke another time record for the British. He got his position for the final but unfortunately was beaten by the rest. However, he still held his position and was rewarded two bronzes for doing so. He finished third, 1:44.98 behind Hwang Sunwoo and David Popovici.

2022 COMMONWEALTH GAMES

Commonwealth Games is a meaningful event for most competitive swimmers. And it was something particularly special for Dean. He came home with lots of medals, seven in total consisting of 6 silvers and one gold.

He got his individual silvers from 100-meter freestyle, 200-meter freestyle, and 200 IM. As for the rest of the silver medals, he got them by helping Team England to win in the 400-meter freestyle, 800-meter freestyle, and 400-meter mixed freestyle.

Dean successfully snatched the gold medal during the 400 medley relay, which was the only non-Australian to win during the Games.

2022 SHORT COURSE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

In the 2022 Short Course World Championships that was held in Melbourne, he got another bronze medal by finishing third to Hwang Sunwoo and Popovici again.
